Carlinville, IL-- James Edward “Jim “ Rolando, 80, of Carlinville, passed away Sunday morning May 12, 2019 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was born January 16, 1939 to Ernest and Catherine (Fenoglio) Rolando and they preceded him in death. He married his high school sweetheart Ann Marie Brown on June 2, 1962 at Sts. Simon and Jude Church in Gillespie.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years; two children, James Rolando of Lake in the Hills, and Julie (Brian) Foster of Lockport; one grandson Nolan Foster; two sisters JoAnn (Terry) Plovich of Staunton and Margaret (Alan) Rolando of Gillespie, and several nieces and nephews.
Jim attended Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic grade school and graduated from Gillespie High School in 1956. He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University (Charleston), with a B.S. in Mathematics Education in 1960. While at Eastern, he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. In 1969, Jim received his M.S. in Secondary Education in Mathematics at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He received an additional Type 72 Certificate in Guidance and Counseling from SIU-E.
Jim taught at Gillespie High School his entire career and retired in 1994. He then taught off campus classes at Lewis and Clark for the next 10 years, while continuing to substitute teach in mathematics at Carlinville High School.
He was also very involved in the community. Jim was one of the first lectors at Mass at Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Gillespie, and also served as a Eucharistic Minister. He continued to fill both roles at Sts. Mary and Joseph Church in Carlinville where he also served as a trustee for over 30 years. Jim served on the building committee for the construction of the new church in the 1990’s. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus in Gillespie and Carlinville, and also a member of the Carlinville Elk’s.
Jim enjoyed his family, especially spending time with his grandson. He also spent time with friends, golfing with the Thursday golf group, playing cards on Monday nights, and traveling the United States and internationally.
Visitation: 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2019 at Sts. Mary and Joseph Church in Carlinville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019 with Father Michael Haag officiating. Immediately following the Mass, a lunch will be served at the church before proceeding to burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Gillespie. Memorials can be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, The Sts.
