Judy Marie (Schmutzler) Cordum

May 21, 1943 ~ October 23, 2018 (age 75)

Funeral services for Judy Cordum (nee Schmutzler), 75, of Gillespie, will be at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 900 West Broadway, Gillespie, on Saturday, October 27, 2018. Mrs. Cordum passed away in the early hours of October 23, at her home after a lengthy struggle with multiple forms of cancer. Throughout her physical ordeal she acted with dignity, grace, and optimism, proving to be an inspirational role model for her positive outlook and strong religious faith. She lived by the precepts of: see your obligations, even afflictions, as opportunities; be kind; be grateful; and trust God. Judy was born in Litchfield on May 21, 1943, to Ken and Edith Rolando Schmutzler. Her family lived in Macoupin County and in Missouri during her youth. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in English; she later earned a MA in education from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She married her husband Kenneth Cordum on February 5, 1966, in a specially built chapel in West Plains, Missouri. They settled in Gillespie where they raised their two children, Terry and Susan. Judy taught at many levels in CUSD7 for her entire career, finishing as a fourth grade teacher. She shaped hundreds of young lives with her high expectations and exceptional teaching talent. She is remembered for her many skills, all of which she shared with great verve and generosity: perennial gardening, garment making, quilting, and volunteerism in church and civic organizations. After her retirement, Judy was a devoted member of The Partnership for Educational Excellence in CUSD7, serving as its secretary for many years. Her teaching background, sharp financial mind, and steadfast commitment to quality programs leave a lasting legacy. She was also an active leader and positive force at First United Methodist Church of Gillespie, participating in United Methodist Women and in Harvest Feast She was devoted to her family and took great pride and pleasure in the accomplishments of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. Her children are Terry Cordum (Shelly) of Alton, Illinois, and Susan (Pete) Stromsland of Gillespie. She was the devoted grandmother of Katie (Kathryn) Stromsland and Jason Stromsland. Her mother Edie Schmutzler lives in West Plains, Missouri; her twin brother, Kenneth Schmutzler (Fayette) in Golden, Missouri; and her sister Vicki Gregory (Gaylord) in West Plains Missouri. She is also survived by several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Ken Schmutzler. The family will receive friends and celebrate Judy’s life at Gillespie’s First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to The Partnership for Educational Excellence and the First United Methodist Church, both of Gillespie.
