Carl Lee Behrens

September 9, 1935 ~ June 11, 2020 (age 84)


Carl “Sonny” Lee Behrens, 84, passed away June 11, 2020 in Okeechobee, Florida after battling complications from an emergency surgery. He was born on September 9, 1935 in Carlinville, Illinois to the late Dr. Carl W. and Harriet Behrens. Carl grew up in Bunker Hill, Illinois and graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1953. He attended Shurtliff College before enlisting in the United States Marines, where he served proudly for two years. After being discharged from the Marines, Carl attended McKendree University, where he received his undergraduate degree and then attended the University of Illinois, where he received his masters degree. He began teaching Business Education for the Bethalto School District where he retired after 30 years of service. Carl was a long standing member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners. He also served in the Bunker Hill Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years and actively served several years as commissioner for the city of Bunker Hill. He is survived by his wife, Virginia M. Behrens and son, Justin C. Behrens, both of Newberg, Oregon and daughter, Jennifer L. Anderson of Gaston, Oregon. Also surviving is son-in-law Michael Anderson; grandchildren Jacob Anderson, Danielle Anderson, and Lucas Anderson, all residing near Gaston, Oregon; and sister Suzanne Gusewelle and her husband Wayne of Edwardsville, Illinois and their two children. A brother, David Behrens, preceded him in death. There will be a graveside service for family and friends at the Bunker Hill Cemetery on July 11, 2020 at 10:00 AM, with Rev. Jeremy Wood officiating.
